Shahid Afridi smacked two sixes in consecutive balls to keep Sylhet Super Stars’ hopes still alive as they defeated Dhaka Dynamites by six wickets in the Bangladesh Premier League on Wednesday.
Dhaka needed 10 runs in the last over, bowled by Farhad Reza and Afridi took a single in the first ball of the last over.
However, Reza uprooted the stumps of Sohail Tanvir in the next ball to send shivers down Sylhet fans’ spines. Next came Mushfiq, who took a single to send Afridi back on strike with the Stars needing eight from three balls.
Afridi was in buoyant mood, banging in two sixes, first over square leg and then one down the fine leg, to hand Sylhet an emphatic victory.
Earlier, Junaid Siddique (51) and Ravi Bopara (55) hit half centuries to keep Sylhet going after Dhaka had posted 157 for 5.
Kumar Sangakkara was once again Dhaka’s top scorer, making 48 this time while Farhad Reza and Nasir Hossain both made 31 to help Dhaka make a solid total.
Despite the loss, Dhaka still are favourites to go through as a win against Barisal Bulls on Thursday will give them a last four spot regardless of how Sylhet do against Comilla Victorians earlier on the day.
A Sylhet win will leave things up to net run rate, meaning the Super Stars need a big win and pray for Dhaka to lose big.
