Sick rebels ‘burning elderly women alive as witches

Rebels in the Central African Republic have abducted women and burnt them as witches in order to cement their hold on lawless areas, a leaked United Nations report has revealed.

Graphic photographs from the war-torn country, which has been plagued by sectarian violence since Muslim rebels seized power in March 2013, show women as old as 70 tied to stakes being lowered towards a fire.

Christian militia leaders are said by the U.N. to have used the torture to exploit local superstitions in rural areas outside the country’s capital, Bangui, between December 2014 and early 2015.

The U.N.’s stabilisation mission, MINUSCA, said 13 attacks against victims aged between 45 and 70 are said to have taken place near Baoro in Nana-Mambere – on the border with Cameroon.
