Showrunners David Beinoff and D. B. Weiss confirm that the President of the United States wanted advanced copies of upcoming season of the HBO series.
Yes, you have the rights to be jealous of President Barack Obama. Using his elite job status, the commander-in-chief will get to watch season 6 of “Game of Thrones” before any die-hard fans are able to. During the premiere event in Hollywood on Sunday, April 10, showrunners David Beinoff and D. B. Weiss confirmed rumors that POTUS got advanced copies of the new episodes.
When asked if they had any “Aha … we’ve totally made it” moments coming into season 6, Weiss said, “For both of us finding out that the President wanted advanced copies of the episodes, that was an ah-ha moment.” He added, “That was a very strange moment.”
Asked if they granted his wish, Weiss replied, “Yes. He’s the leader of the free world.” Beinoff chimed in, “When the commander-in-chief says, ‘I want to see advance episodes,’ what are you gonna do?”
HBO decided earlier this year that they would not send press any episodes of the show’s upcoming season 6 in advance in an attempt to prevent leak. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo explained it at the time, “It’s painful for Dan (Weiss) and David (Benioff) [when leaks happen]. When you have press copies, inevitably friends ask, ‘Can I see your copy?’ There are things that happen.”
Well, that rule apparently doesn’t apply for POTUS.
“Game of Thrones” season 6 will premiere on HBO on Sunday, April 24 at 9 P.M.
