Now Turkey claims it didn’t know doomed jet was Russian

Turkey has has now sensationally acknowledged that it did not know the warplane it blew out of the sky for apparently entering its airspace was Russian.

The Turkish military claimed it was following the same protocol it would have for any jet crossing into its airspace, but insisted it was unaware of the nationality of the bomber jet.

Turkey’s military said in a statement: “The nationality of the plane was not known… and the rules of engagement were automatically used.”

The force also said it made significant efforts to rescue the plane’s pilots and said it was ready for “all kinds of cooperation” with Moscow, after inviting Russian defence and military officials to its Ankara headquarters to explain the incident.
