MUMBAI: She has single-handedly changed the Indian tennis scene in the past one year – winning multiple Grand Slams with her partners Leander Paes and Sania Mirza. Swiss star Martina Hingis, who will play for Hyderabad Aces in the Champions Tennis League beginning Monday, said that her ability to adapt to different partners and game situations has been the reason behind her successful season.
“It has been an incredible year. I had hopes of winning one or two Slams, but I have five. It’s been better than expected. My quality to adapt to moments and partners is the key. Leander has one of the best volleys in the game. His reactions are the quickest. We help each other understand our weakness and that’s why we are such a strong force together. He controls the net when I am at the baseline. With Sania, it’s the other way round as she plays exactly opposite to Leander. I can adjust to any partner,” said the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
Talking about Paes, with whom she won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open mixed doubles crown, the 35-year-old said that: “He (Paes) sees the game very well and his instincts are incredible. That’s why we are so good together.”
Comparing her two partners, she said: “We are from different cultures and countries but we have the same understanding, the upbringing is the most important thing. They have their own weaknesses on court. Off the court they are both very happy people, they have so many qualities that makes them champions. I am very lucky to be Sania and Leander’s partner.”
