COMEDIAN Ricky Gervais went down a storm this evening as he opened up the 73rd Golden Globe Awards with another epic monologue.
The 54-year-old – who is known for his controversial jokes – certainly didn’t hold back as he took to the stage for the fourth time to host the ceremony.
In his first sentence, he called the A-listers in the audience a “pill-popping bunch” before going on to insult them all further, by saying that the room was “full of global megastars with amazing talent”, but that “some just married well”.
His jokes also included a pop at Caitlyn Jenner – formerly known as Bruce – who was involved in a fatal car accident last year.
Ricky told the audience, with a glass of lager in his hand: “I’m going to be nice tonight I’ve changed, not as much as Bruce Jenner though.”
“Became a role model in breaking down barriers, but she didn’t do a lot for women drivers. You can’t have everything though,” he added.
Not stopping there, he went on to pick on Jennifer Lawrence, who brought up the fact that women actors were still not being paid as much as male.
He also made a controversial remark about “shoving his Golden Globe up his a**”, which had the audience in stitches.
One viewer wrote online: “What an opening monologue, Ricky Gervais smashed it! #GoldenGlobes,” as another added: “Ricky Gervais killed it. That was extremely inappropriate, but absolutely hysterical.”
“Can @rickygervais host every event, like EVERY event??? #toofunny #sidehurting #tearsoflaughter #GoldenGlobes,” a different person wrote.
Despite the majority loving Ricky’s opener though, some pointed out that they missed Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who hosted last year’s ceremony.
One person said: “I’m really missing amy and tina while really hating ricky gervais (sic)”
