Game of Thrones Breaks Emmys Record

Game of Thrones won 12 awards at Sunday night’s ceremony

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. When you make the Game of Thrones, well, you just win: On Sunday night, the HBO fantasy series matched its record for the most Emmys won in a single year, taking home a whopping 12 awards for its sixth season.
As usual,Thrones got the bulk of its trophies at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys, where it won nine Emmys in categories like special effects, production design, and casting.
All those wins edged Thrones past Hill Street Blues and The West Wing to become the most-awarded drama series in Emmys history, and more kept coming Sunday: The show picked up Emmys for directing, writing, and, most importantly, outstanding drama.
The wins also nabbed Thrones the title of most Emmys ever won by scripted series with 38 wins, passing Frasier‘s 37. If you’re curious, the show with the most Emmys total is Saturday Night Live, which has earned a whopping 45 in its four decades on the air.
If the next two seasons go really well, GOT might have a shot of holding that crown for a bit … before undoubtedly being overthrown by SNL again in the long run. What a metaphor!
