A student of a private engineering college was allegedly murdered at Bolpur in Birbhum district late on Saturday night. Even as the police have lodged a case of unnatural death, no complaint has been lodged so far.
“Nishant Kiran, an engineering student, was admitted by some unknown person on Saturday night to a local hospital where he later died,” district police sources told The Hindu on Sunday. They also said that the reason of Mr. Kiran’s death is not known yet and can only be ascertained only after the post-mortem is conducted.
The State is witnessing sporadic violence in the campus.
In August, the murder of a student in the campus of a government-aided college in West Medinipur district allegedly by the members of Trinamool Congress’ students’ wing had caused State-wide outrage. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee courted controversy when she pointed out that the students’ council of the college was controlled by the Congress and dubbed the incident as a “scuffle” among students.
In the same month, two leaders of the students’ wing of Congress were allegedly shot at near the Raiganj University campus in north Bengal. In the latter case also, the Congress leaders alleged that TMC cadres were behind the attack.
