Doctor Who’s Matt Smith to play Prince Philip in new Netlix original series The Crown

DOCTOR Who is set to regenerate into a royal.

Actor Matt Smith, 33, will be Prince Philip in new historic drama series, The Crown.

Wolf Hall star Claire Foy, 31, plays the newlywed Queen faced with leading the country.

Over 10, hour-long instalments, the series follows her as she struggles to forge a working relationship with Prime Minister Winston Churchill, John Lithgow, 70.

The series is the first by streaming service Netflix to be made in Britain and also the most expensive, with a production cost of £100million.

A spokesman said: “The Crown tells the story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.”

The drama is based on stage hit The Audience, in which Dame Helen Mirren played the Queen.
