Britain’s biggest warship scrapped

David Cameron was under extreme pressure today as it emerged the Government plans to scrap Britain’s biggest warship – two years before new vessels will come into service.

The Prime Minister was accused of “burying” news about the decommissioning of HMS Ocean – the Royal Navy’s flagship – as the decision was not mentioned in a Government white paper on defence and security.

The amphibious assault ship and helicopter carrier, currently deployed in the Mediterranean on a Nato exercise, will be axed in 2018, just four years after undergoing a £65m upgrade.

The scrapping of the ship was only mentioned in the House of Lords on Monday, when Earl Howe brought it up during a debate on the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR).
