The body of the Russian pilot who was killed in the plane shot down by Turkey near the Syrian border will be returned to Russia today as tensions between the countries reach boiling point.
A fierce war of words was sparked this week after a Russian Su-24 bomber was shot down on the Syrian-Turkish border.
Rebels from Syria’s ethnic Turkmen community then shot at lieutenant colonel Oleg Peshkov and his co-pilot as they ejected and tried to parachute to safety.
They were dead as they reached the ground.
As Russia turns the screw on Turkey with strict economic sanctions, the country’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu confirmed the body of the lieutenant colonel Oleg Peshkov had been brought to Turkey late on Saturday.
